Microsoft officially rolled out a patch update containing a warning to Windows 7 users that support and security updates for the operating system will end. Microsoft will no longer provide updates for security holes in Windows 7 since January 14, 2020. This deadline comes about 10 years since Windows 7 was first introduced in 2009

The Windows 7 update will bring up a warning screen that is shown to the user when the computer is turned on containing a warning that support for the operating system will end.

For enterprise customers in Windows 7, at least there is an option to pay for security update extensions until 2023. Windows 7 itself is still the operating system that dominates the desktop market, with a market share of 40.2%.

Microsoft has continued to encourage Windows 7 users to update to Windows 10 to have a better guarantee of security updates. Microsoft even had time to offer users of Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Although official support for Windows 7 will end, Microsoft might make an exception if there is a large-scale security threat. In the past, at least, there have been cases of the spread of WannaCry ransomware that made Microsoft issue an update for Windows XP which was actually retired for three years.
