The November TIOBE Programming Language Popularity Ranking marked an important change in the top three: Python came in second, displacing Java in third place. The leader is still C, with a slight increase in popularity compared to the previous month.
According to Peter Jansen, CEO of TIOBE Software, for the first time in nearly 20 years, C and Java are not leaders. The rise in popularity of Python over the past few years is attributed by many to “fast-growing” fields such as data mining, artificial intelligence, and numerical computing. At the same time, Jansen believes that the rise of Python is more a consequence of a general trend – this language is gaining acceptance for its simplicity and versatility.
It is not yet clear if Python will eventually succeed in pushing the current leader of C, but since the end of 2017, the former has grown in popularity and the latter is gradually losing ground.
