Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The foldable smartphone comes on the market about a year after the Galaxy Z Fold 2. What are the main differences between the two devices?
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 VS Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2
Samsung has been making foldable smartphones for three years now. It started in 2019, with the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. We have now arrived at the third generation of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3
How similar is the third generation to its predecessor, the Z Fold 2?
1. Design
There are some notable changes between the two handsets. For example, the camera module on the back of the Z Fold 3 has changed quite a bit compared to the Z Fold 2. The housing has also become a lot stronger and Z Fold 3 is Samsung’s first water-resistant folding phone.
Of course, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is coming in some flashy new colours. The device is available in a dark green and silver version. The hinge has also become flatter and the gaps in the housing are narrower. Overall the Z Fold 3 looks a lot slicker than its predecessor.
2. Display
Both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Fold 2 have two screens: a so-called ‘cover screen’ on the outside and a large, foldable screen on the inside. Where the cover screen on the Z Fold 2 still had a refresh rate of 60Hz on the Z Fold 3 it has been increased to 120Hz. This makes images and animations look much smoother.
Both the Fold 3’s screens have a high refresh rate. In terms of dimensions, the displays are the same as those of Fold 2. It is striking that the Z Fold 3 has a selfie camera under the screen. The previous Fold still has a small camera hole for the selfie camera. It does take better photos than the new under-display camera in the Z Fold 3.
3. Speed and battery
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Fold 2 are fast smartphones with high-end chips. The Fold 3 has the Snapdragon 888, where the Z Fold 2 has the Snapdragon 865 Plus.
The battery of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has shrunk slightly compared to the Z Fold 2. The difference is very small, but it is always a shame when manufacturers make batteries smaller. Bigger battery life is a plus for everyone.
4. S Pen Support
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 has S Pen support. That does not apply to the Z Fold 2. Samsung has managed to make the folding screen of the Fold 3 about 80 per cent stronger so that the S Pen will not cause any damage. However, the folding screen remains more sensitive than the tempered glass used for normal smartphone screens.
Thanks to the S Pen support, it seems that Samsung has now killed the Galaxy Note series once and for all. Normally, Samsung announces a new Note smartphone around this time of year. For the Z Fold 2, you now pay considerably less. So you don’t have all the latest features, but you can still walk around with a flashy folding phone.
